Which idChess features are useful for chess practicing?

April 22, 2025

In this article, we will describe three key functions of the idChess mobile application, available without a subscription or authorization: recognizing 2D positions, editing the board, and solving chess puzzles.

Scanner

This feature allows you to digitize piece arrangements from pictures, textbooks, or device screens. It is helpful for evaluating complex game scenarios or studying chess literature. For example, if you come across a challenging exercise, you may take a photo, upload it to idChess, and use hints. After uploading the image, you can:

  • Examine it with Stockfish.
  • Switch to the editor.
  • Continue playing.

How to use it:

  1. Open the "Games" → "Boards".
  2. Choose the scanner to add the image.
  3. Import a photo from your gallery or take one with the camera.
  4. Tap the area for digitization and save the result.
  5. Adjust piece location if necessary.

Board editor

A tool for creating your own compositions, studying, and storing them in PGN format. It is possible to train individually or with computer evaluation, which helps prepare for competitions. For instance, practicing endgames — such as rook or knight endings — without risking rating loss is highly beneficial.

How to start:

  1. In the "Games" → "Boards" section, click "Add" and select the editor.
  2. Arrange pieces manually or set up an initial position.
  3. Configure settings (move order, castling availability).

Then, you can:

  • Explore variations in "Analysis."
  • Share or export it.

Chess puzzles

Figuring out answers for tactical problems with gradually increasing levels helps improve technique, strategic vision, and analytical thinking. It is a great way to train online and gain valuable experience from a virtual coach. Applying these skills in tournaments is crucial — spotting such a combination facilitates winning material and guarantees victory in a round.

How to activate this mode:

  1. Go to "Games" → "Chess puzzles."
  2. The puzzle will automatically orient the board for the color you need to play.

If you encounter difficulties:

  • Ask a clue (piece or move highlight).
  • Save it to analyze it later.
